I think, as part of the political system, distrust of government become primarily a set of tired talking points by conservatives, while journalists are trading access for critical thinking. Both seem moving in the wrong direction.

I actually think there is a valid point to the argument that journalists should believe what the government tells you. To a point. If you're on the beat and are told the truth 9 days out of 10 and have no reason to think otherwise it can be difficult to maintain critical thinking. But thats their job...or so I thought.

There is a point where distrust is counterproductive, but its absence is blindly stupid. Can there be no middle ground?
